Golfing on the Maresme Coast, a step between Barcelona & Costa Brava

Just to the north of Barcelona lies the Maresme Coast which offers some great golfing including the beautifully manicured F.W. Hawtree designed Llavaneras Golf Club with its colonial style clubhouse and terrace overlooking the Mediterranean.

Closeby is another Hawtree design, the Vallromanes Golf Club, a parkland course with a traditional style Catalan ‘Masia’ as its clubhouse.

Other courses in the area include La Roca Golf and Sant Vicenc. Depending on hotel location, golf can also be played at Montanya Golf Club and the Spanish Open venues of Real Club de Golf El Prat, and PGA Catalunya, all of which are easily accessible by road.

The Maresme Coast is within easy reach of Barcelona by train or car and its coastline includes some of the best beach resorts north of Barcelona. Calella is probably the best known of these but the Maresme has some delightful spots both coastal and inland.

The capital of the Maresme Coast is the historical town of Mataró which dates back to Roman times and was originally the terminus for the first railway in Spain from Barcelona. Mataro has a superb marina and long sandy beaches, it is also home to the pub ‘The Drunk Monk’ serving over 500 different types of beer including Craft Ales from all around the world.

For wine lovers Alella, which is a centre of wine production that goes back as far as the Romans and is the closest to Barcelona. Although this D.O. is the smallest in Spain there are various wineries of quality in which to visit and enjoy tastings.

Barcelona Golf recommends the Atenea Port Hotel in Mataro which is situated overlooking the marina and a short walk to the town and railway station, ideal for a visit to the centre of Barcelona.

Calella is generally considered the Tourist Capital of the Maresme coast and we at Barcelona Golf recommend the newly refurbished Kaktus Playa Hotel which offers some superb amenities and is 50metres from the beach and beach club. Calella golfing wise is ideally situated to enjoy courses such as Llavaneras Golf Club with the internationally recognised PGA Catalunya, both of which are closeby. The whole trip was organised perfectly. All of our transfers — from the airport to the golf courses, between locations, and back to the airport — were arranged seamlessly and ran exactly as planned.

The best part was how easy they made it for us. All I had to do was tell them which golf courses we wanted to play, the dates and times, and our flight details. They took care of everything else.

The hotel was great, on the beach, a very short walk to restaurants etc. Perfect. The golf courses were all within easy reach and all in great condition.
In summary , Dani organized a great trip for us and in particular, was really prompt in replying to any questions or clarifications needed. Top class , would highly recommend and we are already talking about our next trip !

Our trip was organised by Barcelona Golf which is run and owned by Ian Denham. I have to say that everything was organised perfectly from start to finish. Hotel Sol Port Cambrils, Golf courses, transfers etc., Ian even went as far as coming to meet us at one of the courses. All the group were totally happy and we had a wonderful golfing holiday. I have travelled with Ian and Barcelona golf on other occasions and each time we couldn’t but say the the very best.
