Golf in Spain or Portugal: How to Choose the Perfect Golf Break for You

Blogs

If you want to play golf in a warm climate while staying in Europe, Spain and Portugal are two of the best destinations available.

Both countries offer excellent courses, reliable sunny climates and well-developed golf tourism industries. In fact, Spain alone attracts over 1.2 million golf tourists each year, highlighting just how popular the country has become for international players.

Of course, we are a little biased towards Spain as we love the golf courses of Barcelona.

But while the two destinations are often compared in the public eye, the experience of a golf trip in Spain can feel quite different from one in Portugal.

If you’re planning your next golf break, understanding these differences will help you choose the destination that best suits your group.

Golf in Spain

Spain is one of Europe’s most established golfing nations. The country has hundreds of golf courses spread across many regions, offering golfers a wide variety of landscapes and styles of play.

Because courses are distributed across the country rather than concentrated in a single area, golf in Spain can be very diverse. You can play coastal courses overlooking the Mediterranean, tree-lined parkland layouts, or championship resort courses.

This variety is one of the biggest reasons golfers return to Spain year after year.

Golf in Barcelona and Catalonia

Les Barcelona region offers a particularly unique combination of world-class golf and vibrant city life.

Courses in Catalonia are easily accessible from Barcelona, allowing golfers to combine a morning round with afternoons exploring the city’s restaurants, architecture, and beaches.

This area is ideal for:

  • Short golf breaks
  • Couples or mixed groups
  • Golfers who want cultural excursions alongside their golf games

What sets Catalonia apart from other Spanish golf regions is the sheer quality and variety of courses concentrated within a relatively small area. From the Greg Norman-designed championship layouts at Real Club de Golf El Prat to the scenic coastal fairways at Terramar in Sitges and the mountain-framed parkland of Club de Golf Barcelona, the region caters to every style of golfer without requiring long transfers or multiple base changes.

Many of the finest golf courses in Catalonia are private members’ clubs, which gives the region a distinct character compared to the more resort-heavy south of Spain. Playing here often feels more like a local experience than a tourist one, particularly when booked through Barcelona Golf, as we can arrange exclusive access to clubs that do not accept general public bookings.

The climate also plays a significant role in Catalonia’s appeal. With mild temperatures and reliable sunshine throughout the year, conditions rarely disappoint. Spring and autumn are particularly popular with visiting golfers, but even winter rounds are comfortably playable in a way that few northern European destinations can match.

The upcoming Ryder Cup at Camiral Resort in Costa Brava further highlights the region’s growing reputation for high-quality golf with a rich history in the sport.

Golf in southern Spain

Southern Spain, particularly Andalusia and the Costa del Sol, is one of Europe’s most famous golf regions.

The area is sometimes called the “Costa del Golf” due to the large concentration of courses located along the coastline.

With warm weather, resort facilities, and dozens of courses within short distances, it’s a major hub for golf tourism. The Costa del Sol has even been recognised as one of Europe’s leading golf destinations thanks to its infrastructure and quality courses.

Southern Spain is especially popular for golfers who want:

  • Reliable sunshine
  • Multiple courses nearby
  • Longer golf holidays with several rounds

Golf in Portugal

Portugal is another outstanding destination for golf, with golf being entrenched in the culture. In fact, golf has been responsible for a lot of the development in Portugal. Unlike Spain though, the experience tends to be slightly more concentrated geographically.

While Spain spreads its golf across many regions across the eastern and southern coast, Portugal’s golf tourism is focused around several key areas, particularly the Algarve and the Lisbon region.

Despite its smaller size, Portugal still offers around 80 golf courses, many of which are designed with international golf tourism in mind. These courses are known for their high standards, scenic locations, and excellent facilities.

For golfers, this means Portugal provides a compact but high-quality golfing experience.

Golf in the Algarve

The Algarve is Portugal’s best-known golf destination and one of Europe’s most established golfing regions.

Located along Portugal’s southern coast, the Algarve is famous for its sunshine, dramatic Atlantic views, and impressive collection of championship golf courses.

Many of the region’s courses are located close together, making it easy for visitors to stay in one place and play multiple courses during the same trip.

This makes the Algarve particularly appealing for:

  • Dedicated golf holidays
  • Groups planning several rounds across many different courses
  • Golfers looking for resort-style convenience with courses on their doorsteps.

The Algarve’s tourism infrastructure is also highly developed, with many luxury golf resorts offering multi-round golf packages, accommodation, and practice facilities all in one place.

Golf in Lisbon and the Central Region

North of the Algarve, the Lisbon and Central Portugal region offers a slightly different golfing experience.

Courses here are spread across beautiful Atlantic landscapes, rolling countryside, and coastal cliffs, often within an hour’s drive of Lisbon itself.

Some of Portugal’s most highly regarded layouts can be found here, many designed by leading architects and set within natural surroundings.

This region is particularly appealing to golfers who want to combine golf with culture and city exploration.

Similarly to Barcelona, Lisbon provides:

  • Historic neighbourhoods and architecture
  • Excellent restaurants and nightlife
  • Easy international travel connections

Golfers can play a morning round along the Atlantic coast and still spend the evening exploring one of Europe’s most vibrant capital cities.

Because of this balance between golf and culture, the Lisbon region is often a great choice for shorter golf breaks or mixed groups where not everyone plays golf.

Spain vs Portugal: key differences

When deciding between Spain and Portugal for your golf break, the best option usually comes down to the type of experience you want.

Variety of courses

Spain offers significantly more regional variety.

With hundreds of courses spread across different landscapes and climates, golfers can experience very different styles of golf depending on where they travel.

Portugal, by contrast, has fewer courses overall, though many of them are high-quality resort layouts.

Resort convenience

Portugal’s golf destinations, especially the Algarve, are known for integrated golf resorts where accommodation, restaurants, and courses are located together.

This structure makes planning a golf holiday simple, particularly for groups who want to play several rounds without travelling far between courses.

Spain also offers strong resort-style options, particularly in regions like Costa Dorada and parts of southern Spain, where golfers can stay on-site and enjoy multiple rounds with excellent practice facilities. This has the added advantage of being able to step outside the resort and explore nearby towns, beaches, and cultural attractions.

Golf and culture

Spain often appeals to golfers who want to combine their trip with culture, food, and city exploration.

Destinations such as Barcelona allow visitors to mix golf with sightseeing, historic neighbourhoods, and some of Europe’s most famous restaurants.

Portugal’s golf trips tend to be more resort-focused, centred around relaxation, beaches, and golf.

Length of stay

Golf tourism research suggests that international golf travellers often stay longer than typical holidaymakers. In Spain, golf tourists average almost 12 nights per visit, significantly longer than the average tourist stay.

Resort destinations like the Algarve also encourage longer stays, as golfers often book multi-round packages across several nearby courses. You’re hardly ever more than 20 minutes away from a golf course!

Choosing between Spain and Portugal for golf

Ultimately, the right choice depends on what you want from your golf trip.

Choose Spain if you want:

  • A wide variety of golf regions
  • Scenic and diverse courses
  • Golf combined with culture and cities
  • Flexible trip lengths

Choose Portugal if you want:

  • Resort-style golf holidays
  • Several courses close together
  • A relaxed beach atmosphere

Both destinations offer exceptional golf and fantastic playing conditions throughout much of the year.

Planning your golf break

Spain and Portugal are two of Europe’s best golf destinations for good reason. Great weather, world-class courses, and strong tourism infrastructure make both countries ideal for a golf holiday.

By choosing the destination that best fits your travel style, whether that’s the variety of Spain or the convenience of Portugal, you can ensure your next golf trip delivers the experience you’re looking for.
