Time for Tee: Women and golf

Europe accounts for 22% of the world’s total golf supply, but how many women are involved?

Out of 678,372 golfers in the UK, only 14% are women!

The European region, which is home to some of the most prominent and visually stunning golf courses, has nearly 22% of the world’s total golf supply. And despite the eastern coast of Scotland being at the forefront of golf history since the 15th century, golf participation in the UK is far behind that of other European countries. Taking female participation in golf into consideration, this is even lower in the UK than our European counterparts.

In the UK, there are around 3,000 golf courses and clubs distributed all around the country, and it is estimated that 678,372 people play on the green. Despite relatively high figures for golfers in the UK, only 14% are women, which is significantly lower than other countries. For example, Germany has a far greater inclusion of women, with one of the highest percentages of women playing. From a total 639,137, 35% are women and the appeal is ever-growing. Austria also displays one of the highest female golfing communities, with 35% of their talent playing. Likewise, Switzerland and the Netherlands has 32% of women golfers.

Yet things in the UK are changing.

Perhaps it’s worth noting that despite much change towards women’s rights over the years, an inherently traditionally male orientated sport has shown elements of exclusivity towards women in golf. Muirfield Golf Club in Scotland remains to date the most famous case that has traditionally had a men-only policy. Yet in March this year, Muirfield golf course overturned this policy and now allows women to join its club for the first time, after members of the club decided against the exclusion of women – having lost the right to hold the Open Championship at its grounds. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who runs the course, announced that 80% of members voted for women to be allowed to join their club, and Muirfield was now back in the running to stage the world’s oldest open championship. What’s more, only 1% of the UK’s golf clubs have a single sex policy, indicating a rise in female golfers at home.

Indeed, the future for women playing golf in the UK and around Europe is shining bright, as new data suggests there has been a surge in the number of females opting to play this prestigious sport. The Ladies European Tour has noted that this surge may be a consequence of an exciting calibre of female professionals hitting the scene, as well as positive national media campaigns. There has also been a renewed focus on attracting more women and young girls to play golf. Get into Golf, a national campaign supported by amateur bodies such as The European Tour, The PGA, The Ladies European Tour, The R&A, and Sky Sports, has also positively marked a change among women getting into golf. The Confederation of Golf in Ireland runs a Get into Golf programme for women and has so far converted 60% of its players to become a member in 2015. This is echoed among women golfers in Scotland, where more than 100 golf clubs are running coaching programmes and 86% of the participants in 2015 were women.

Women on Golf | Barcelonagolf.com

In all this glory and triumph for women’s golf participation in Europe, is there something men can do?

Men can always play a part in encouraging women to take up the sport. One of the most cited reasons women get involved is due to a positive influence from their male peers, but the figures remain low. According to recent statistics, 50% of male golfers get their sons into the game, but only 12% claim their daughters play on the green. The same report also demonstrated that a quarter of male golfers are interested in playing casual golf with women, whilst half of women play golf because their male partners encourage them to do so. Similarly, 78% of male golfers state that their partners do not play with them. Indeed, if a quarter of women admit to feeling prejudiced on the green, it is only right that men do everything they can to encourage women to play. Golf has come a long way and there are several women making their mark on golf history in the UK, including Jodi Shadoff, Charley Hull and Mel Reid, as well as international female golfers such as Inbee Park and Lydia Ko.

It is vital to encourage women to participate in golf in the UK and across Europe, and it’s only a matter of time until numbers increase substantially, making golf one of the only traditional sports to embrace women unlike ever before.

Barcelona is truely ‘Much more’. Let us organise a great golf break in Barcelona for you.

Barcelona Golf Break

A brief history of the development of golf courses in Catalonia

Founded in 1914 and designed by Harry S. Colt, Sant Cugat is the oldest golf course in Catalonia and came into being as a way of attracting highly qualified British and American engineers to the area, some of whom were working on the new Barcelona-Sant Cugat railway line. Golf was slow to take on with few courses being built and only then for the more prosperous amongst the community, the most notable being the Real Club El Prat in 1954.

It was not until the 1990’s that golf really started to take a hold and courses started to spring up on a more notable scale mainly in the Costa Brava and to a lesser degree in the Costa Daurada. In 1999 the spectacular PGA de Catalunya course, designed by Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo opened and was an instant success being handed the Sarazen World Open in October that year and the Spanish Open in April the following year by the European Tour, a record in itself. The year 2000 was to prove something very special for golf on the Costa Brava as it received the award as the ‘Best emerging golf destination in the world’ by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

Quite probably, Catalonia will always be chasing Andalucia in terms of numbers of golf courses but in quality the story differs somewhat. For one thing we can boast of superbly designed courses set in majestic surroundings, whether it be overlooking the crystal waters of the Mediterranean or having the imposing snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees as a backdrop.

Golf and golf courses will always have an air of controversy about them and probably more so in Catalonia where issues of water and land use are hotly contested in one form or another. In recent weeks a variety of reports have surfaced on the theme of golf courses, including a television documentary on the subject, albeit involving a slant on a construction issue as well. One thing is pretty certain; that with modern advances in water treatment and desalination plants the issue of water should not pose a problem taking into account that the courses are also nowadays sown with grass more hardy to withstand the
particular climate.

Catalonia has suffered this year along with the rest of Spain from a decrease in the number of tourists arriving in the country. The debates have once again opened on whether to build more golf courses, albeit on a more forceful note in order to promote a better quality of tourism. Studies show that golfers do, in general spend more money on holiday, 20% on the golf and 80% on a variety of other things including hotels, restaurants and cultural tours. Opinions are varied on the issue but the general census of opinion is now tending to lean towards the courses, however this leads to another issue in that many courses in the planning stages are in the hands of large construction companies who also want to construct high quality homes on the borders of fairways and greens. There are concerns that these homes are built as either second residences for Spanish nationals or holiday homes for foreigners, mainly from the northern parts of Europe. We are therefore confronted once again with the idea that golf is an elitist sport that is only there for people who can afford it; incidentally the same has happened with second homes in the mountain areas that are only used for skiing in season and resemble ghost towns for most of the year.

The idea that golf is an elitist sport should have left us a long time ago by the number of people who play
the game all over the world and from all walks of life. In Catalonia golf has to be more accessible, the building of Par 3 Pitch and Putt courses here has gone a long way to alleviate the problem and has proved an excellent way to introduce people to the game.

If we go back to the subject of good quality tourism, which includes golf, then we should be thinking in terms of enticing people to visit Catalonia with good quality hotels, apartments, guesthouses and restaurants so that they return again and again.

Golf for tourists and foreigners living and working in Catalonia is excellent with open tournaments and circuits being held at various clubs every week throughout the year all over the country. The only stipulation is that a handicap certificate is needed, a general requirement wherever one goes.

At Barcelona Golf we organise golf days for businesses, congresses and conventions as well as tailor made golf holidays for groups and individuals in Catalonia. For more information please contact us.

Next Ryder Cup will take place in Hazeltine National Golf Club (Chaska, Minnesota, USA), 2016; Le Golf National (París, Francia), 2018; Whistling Straits (Kohler, Wisconsin, USA), 2020.

Bidding Process

Six nations remain in the running to host The 2022 Ryder Cup Ryder Cup Europe can announce that six nations have formally confirmed their intention to submit a Bid for The 2022 Ryder Cup. From the list of seven nations who initially expressed an interest in hosting what will be the 44th staging of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States, Denmark has advised of its intention not to proceed with a formal Bid leaving Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey still in the running. Turkey’s formal notification to bid was accepted by Ryder Cup officials and supersedes their earlier decision to withdraw.

Ryder Cup Director Richard Hills, said: “The Ryder Cup bidding process has a number of important milestones and we very much look forward to working with the six bidding nations, their representatives, and their national golf federations, in developing the specifics of their respective 2022 bids.

“The key criteria we have in place ensure we evaluate each bid equally on both its sporting and commercial merits, while allowing us to judge each bid fairly and thoroughly.”

Having already taken delivery of an official information pack, the six bidding nations will prepare to host a series of meetings and inspection visits by Ryder Cup Europe officials between now and Thursday April 30, 2015, which is the date that formal submission of official bids need to be made.

Following the series of inspections, a period of detailed analysis of each bid by a management team working on behalf of Ryder Cup Europe – together with the assistance of an independent panel of experts – will be undertaken, with the announcement of the successful host country and venue for The 2022 Ryder Cup planned for autumn 2015.
